Welcome Our New Faculty for the 2021-22 School Year!

This year, my communications focus has been on practical matters, such as opening the school during a pandemic AND during a major campus renovation.  I did not want you to forget, however, that we have a number of talented new teachers who have joined the Houston Academy family this year. I can truly say that we certainly have never had a more talented group of faculty joining our team. I’d like to take the opportunity now to introduce them to you. 

Ellen Bridges

Mrs. Bridges will be teaching 3rd Grade. She has an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education from Auburn University and a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Troy University-Dothan. Previously, she taught in Dothan City Schools for 25 years.

Mrs. Bridges is married to her high school sweetheart, Tony. They have two children. Hudson is 19 and Mary Lisenby is 16. For relaxation, she enjoys spending time at the lake with her family and dog, Hallie. 

When asked why she came to HA, she said, “After retiring from Dothan City Schools after 25 years, I knew that I wanted to continue teaching. I have a few friends who teach at Houston Academy and love it. After interviewing and viewing the campus I knew that Houston Academy was a great fit for me. I felt so comfortable and at home.” On why she became a teacher, Ellen articulated “I have always loved children. As a teen I loved to babysit and work with children. When I would babysit I enjoyed turning my time babysitting into a learning lesson or adventure.” 

Jenna Brown

Mrs. Brown will be a 5K Teaching Assistant. She received a Bachelor's from Troy University and previously taught preschool at Way to Grow Child Development Center.

Her husband is Andrew Brown, and they have a son, Sawyer Brown. She loves spending time with her family and especially enjoys staking trips to the beach. Additionally, she enjoys baking and reading a good book. 

Mrs. Brown says she came to HA because she was drawn to the family environment. Mrs. Brown became a teacher because she “…love[s] helping children learn and thrive as they grow.” 

Brittany Curry 

Mrs. Curry is joining Houston Academy as a 4th grade teacher. She has a Bachelor of Arts from Auburn University and a Master’s of Education in Elementary Education from the University of South Alabama. Mrs. Curry has taught kindergarten in Madison, MS and 4th and 5th grades in Fairhope, AL. In Dothan, she has taught 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades at Montana Magnet School and Highlands Elementary School. She is also the Director of the Dothan Chapter of the National League of Junior Cotillions. 

Mrs. Curry is married to her husband of 15 years, Matthew Curry. Matthew is originally from Dothan, which is what brought her family from Fairhope to Dothan five years ago. They have two children that will be joining the Houston Academy family this year, as well. Their daughter, Monroe, will be a 5th grader, and their son, Ladner, will be a 1st grader. They are very excited to have their family together at Houston Academy.

Of teaching, Mrs. Curry states, “I love children and always have. I am a life-long learner and delight in sharing that passion with my students, as well. Ultimately, the teachers that inspired me to go into education were the ones that I respected, was able to bond with, and trust. It was apparent that those teachers genuinely had all of their students’ best interests at heart. In addition to encouraging, challenging, and educating students, my sincere desire is to make a positive, lasting impact on their lives.” 

Even before coming here to teach, the Currys had decided that they were sending their children to Houston Academy. Mrs. Curry affirms, “…after speaking with other parents and Houston Academy alumni, we felt that the level of preparedness they'd have upon graduating from HA would be exemplary. Therefore, whenever I found out that there were openings to teach at Houston Academy this year, I was eager to apply. Naturally, I wanted to teach at the same school where our children would be attending. We feel that God has truly blessed all of us in this transition. We have been welcomed with open arms, and are overjoyed about joining the HA family!”

Sara David

Mrs. David will be teaching Middle School English. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University. Before earning her teaching certification, Sara had a career in sales in Atlanta. Prior to HA, she taught in Florida where she earned a Highly Effective Teacher rating. 

Her husband is Upper School English teacher and co-Department Chair, Brian David. She and Brian have two boys. Caleb is 4 years old and is in 4P at HA, and Christopher is 2 and will be at HA next year. 

Sara enjoys Reading, yoga, travel, and spending time with her boys. She says she became a teacher, in part, because of the influence of her husband. She said, “When I met my husband, who taught 7th grade English at the time, I realized I was not as passionate about my career as he was about his. I started substituting at his school and fell in love with the kids, so I earned my teaching certificate and changed careers.” She is coming to HA because, as she said, “I missed teaching and wanted to be part of the HA family, where my husband works and my son had an amazing first year!”

Sheryl Diel

Mrs. Diel will be working as a 5K assistant. Formerly, she has assisted teachers in kindergarten and 1st grade and taught 3P. 

Sheryl is a proud mother to two children.  Her daughter and her husband have three sons, ages 10, 7 and 3.  Her son and his wife have two daughters, ages 10 and 2.  

In her leisure time she loves to hike, travel, play cards and games, and work puzzles. However. she most enjoys spending time with her grandkids.

Mrs. Diel became an assistant to teachers because she “…loves helping children learn new things. They have a unique way of looking at the world around them and that brings me joy.” She also stated, “My friend Vanessa Howell spoke so highly about HA; she refers to it as her dream job!  She shared how close the staff is and how it’s like a family.  I knew that this was someplace I wanted to be a part of, so when she told me that HA was looking for someone to assist Kindergarten, I applied immediately!”  

Brian Gates 

Mr. Gates joins HA to teach to Middle School and Upper School art. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education with a minor in Art History from Florida State University. He taught for 10 years at Northside Elementary in Panama City, FL, and he also had a full career in the business world. Mr. Gates been married for 24 years to Debbie Gates, with whom he has a 17-year-old daughter named Faith.

In regard to teaching Art, Mr. Gates avers, “I love Art and create pet portraits for families in my spare time. I love to be outdoors and live for football season! My life is a testament to God and what he continues to do in my career and personal life.” 

Mr. Gates maintains that he became an art teacher because “My high school art teacher inspired me to follow his path. I enjoy creating a safe and fun environment for my students to not only create but learn.” About Houston Academy, he attests, “I absolutely love the colleagues here. Everyone is not only professional but passionate about education.”

Swayze Gholson

Mrs. Gholson will be teaching 2nd grade. She holds Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with endorsements in English, Social Studies, Health and Wellness, and Special Education from the University of Mississippi. She previously taught 2nd grade at Hillcrest Elementary in Enterprise. Originally from Columbus, Mississippi, she moved to Dothan when she married Andrew Gholson, who graduated from HA in 2015. they have two dogs, Colonel and Nola. 

In her spare time, she loves to be with her family, cook, read, travel, and cheer on the Ole Miss Rebels, Auburn Tigers, and New Orleans Saints. If she weren’t a teacher, she says would probably be an Interior Designer...you can always find her shopping at Home Goods or Target! 

Swayze grew up in a private school very similar to HA that even had the same mascot (her husband reminds her that we are the “better Raiders”)! She attests that she loves the family environment a school like HA provides. “The reputation of academic excellence far proceeds Houston Academy. I knew I wanted to work here immediately upon moving to Dothan. After my interview, I was drawn even more to HA because of the supportive administration, caring faculty, and top-notch facilities and technology. It is evident that Houston Academy's mission is to foster student-centered learning, as well as to prepare students for success well beyond their school years. I am thrilled to be a part of the HA family!” 

Kaylin Whitworth Grant

Mrs. Grant will be a lead 4P teacher. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Troy University. Previously, she has taught 3P, 4P, was an English as a Second Language Teacher, a Special Education Aide, and a Reading Summer Camp Instructor. 

For fun, Mrs. Grant enjoys reading, fishing, and cooking. She is married to Edwin "Win" Grant, and has a daughter, Frances Grant. She decided to join the Houston Academy faculty because she wanted to be part of a school with a strong educational influence, and she became a teacher because she wanted to be able to serve the community in a positive way.

Samantha Krietemeyer

Mrs. Krietemeyer is our new Dean of College Advising and US Guidance Counselor.

She holds a BS in English from Troy University, an M.S. from Troy University in Teaching English to Students of Other Languages, and an M.S. in School Counseling. Samantha taught English at Daleville HS and Dale County HS and also taught adjunct at Troy-Dothan. 

Mrs. Krietemeyer has been married for five years to Stephen, and she has a newborn (born June 7, 2021), Cal. She enjoys photography, traveling, reading, and “lake time.”

She said she came to HA because, “My position offers the opportunity to be a college advisor and to be a counselor for students. Being able to perform either role is a privilege, so this experience is a dream.” She loves helping teenagers express themselves and says, “It is a joy to watch them discover their passions and find avenues to pursue their dreams.”

Sara Purvis

Sara will be teaching 3rd Grade and serving as the Blue Zone Sponsor. The Blue Zone is our school spirit club which Sara founded while a student at Houston Academy! Sara is a member of the HA class of 2015. Sara holds a bachelor’s of education from Auburn University and formerly taught Holly Hill Elementary School. 

Sara’s connections to HA run deep, as she is the Granddaughter of the late Lydianne Merritt and the
Daughter of Segrid White, who is a veteran 2nd grade teacher. 

Sara enjoys doing DIY projects, calligraphy, shopping, spending time with her Goldendoodle (Millie), and taking part in “lake days.” 

When asked why she was returning to HA, Sara said, “After graduation from Houston Academy, I always knew my legacy wasn’t finished. I have always called HA my home away from home, and I am blessed with the opportunity to make an impact on the next generation of students, just as my previous teachers did upon me.” Sara also said she “became a teacher to instill confidence in young adults, so that they are equipped with a strong foundation for today’s society.” 

Lisa Rahn

Mrs. Rahn will be serving as a 4P Assistant. After graduating from Houston Academy in 1999, Lisa earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Mercer University and a Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication from University of Georgia. She spent 15 years in the field of journalism as a senior technical writer, newspaper reporter, and magazine editor. She also worked as a standardized patient at Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine. 

Mrs. Rahn attended Houston Academy from kindergarten through senior year, and her twin boys are current H.A. students.

Mrs. Rahn says, “Much of my life has been spent in connection with Houston Academy, first as a student, and now as a parent. Working here is like returning home, and I am excited about this new role in my community. I sought the position of teacher assistant to be a part of the atmosphere of growth Houston Academy exemplifies. I look forward to supporting the amazing teachers who enrich the lives of our children.” 

Again, we are absolutely thrilled with our new additions to the family. Please take the time to reach out and welcome this fantastic group of educators! 

Our New Faculty and Staff

This has been a busy summer at HA. While the students have been frolicking in the pool and lounging on the beach, Mrs. Boothe, members of the lower school faculty, and I have spent much of our time interviewing and hiring a number of new teachers.  Consequently, I thought I would fill everyone in on the teachers who have chosen to join the Houston Academy family for next school year. 

Extended Day Program Director

Emily Granger

Emily Granger will be our new Extended Day Program (EDP) Director. Ms. Granger has an Associate of Science degree in early childhood education from Wallace College and is currently enrolled at Troy-Dothan, working on her B.S. degree. Emily comes with outstanding credentials and substantial experience running after-school programs.  I expect our daycare to be interactive and educationally oriented. 

Emily has a daughter named Olivia Anne, who is going into the third grade. She also has a dachshund named Mille, who Olivia views as her “sister.” Emily enjoys crafting with Olivia, junking flea markets, antiquing, watching Auburn football games, playing tennis, and reading.

Lower School Physical Education

Ginny Adams

Mrs. Adams is a certified teacher with a degree from Auburn University-Montgomery, and she is also a certified United States Tennis Association tennis professional. In addition to her 20 years of teaching in public schools, Ginny has spent the last two years working at HA as a teaching assistant and our as our JV tennis coach. In addition, many of our students have been taking tennis lessons from her over the past two years.  Personally, in my capacity as a "tennis parent," I've been thrilled with how well she has worked with our children as a coach.  We expect great things from her in PE, as well. 

Ginny is married to Scott Adams, and she has two children Sissy, a rising 7th grader at HA and Will, a ninth grader at Northside Methodist Academy. In her spare time, Ginny enjoys reading, playing, teaching and coaching tennis, and going to the beach.

3 Year-old Preschool

Chera Lee

Chera Lee will be our new 3P teacher.  Mrs. Lee has a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from the University of Alabama. Previously, she has taught 2P, 3P, 4P, kindergarten, and 2^nd grade.  Additionally, Mrs. Lee has served as a teaching assistant and tutor and Grandview Elementary here in Dothan. Previously, she taught at Brookwood Forest Elementary and Grantswood Elementary in Birmingham. Chera is meticulous and assiduous, and has been a fantastic volunteer here at HA. 

Chera is married to Stuart Lee, and she has two children who attend HA – Douglas is in 3P and Mary Lawrence is in kindergarten. Her interests include running, reading, shopping, baking with her children, and spending time with family and friends.

Kindergarten

Cara Dennis

Cara Dennis will be teaching kindergarten this year. Cara was a member of the first third grade class at Houston Academy in 1970. She graduated from The University of Alabama with a degree in early childhood education and received her masters from Troy University in early childhood education.

Cara has been married to Mark Dennis for 29 years. They have 4 children, 3 of whom have graduated from Houston Academy. Carolyne is 23 and is a nurse at Children's Hospital in Birmingham. Catie (21) and Jackson (18) are both students at Auburn University. Sam is 9 and is going to be in the third grade at Houston Academy. Cara is a member of First United Methodist Church, and she loves to spend time at the beach with her family.  

Tiffany Sulsberger

Tiffany Sulsberger holds a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Georgia State University with an endorsement in Mathematics. She also earned an M.A. in Secondary Biology from Western Governors University.

Tiffany’s hometown (Rome, Georgia) is very near my old “stomping ground” in Northwest Georgia.  Last September, her husband, Scott, took a position with Hornsby Tire Distributors and they were relocated to Dothan. Tiffany’s two children both attend HA. Her daughter, Lauren, will be in 5K, and her son, Ryan, will be in 3P.

Anne Zeron

Anne Zeron will be our new 5K teacher assistant. Mrs. Zeron grew up in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and graduated from The University of Alabama where she met her husband, Bryan.  Anne moved to Dothan three years ago from Jacksonville, Florida where she worked as a teacher’s assistant at St Mark’s Episcopal Day School.

Anne has two children, Mary Blake and George.  In between running her kids from activity to activity, she enjoy reading, exercising, and spending time with her family, which includes her dog, Oliver.

Learning Specialist

Lauren Thomas

Lauren Thomas is joining us this year as our Learning Specialist. She graduated from Auburn University (Magna Cum Laude) with an M.S. and B.S. in Communication Disorders from Auburn University. While working on her Masters Degree, she received the Outstanding Graduate Clinician Award, as selected by the professors and faculty at Auburn. She has also received Orton-Gillingham certification, which allows Lauren to work with students with dyslexia and other reading issues.

Ms. Thomas grew up in Dothan. She is the daughter of Jim and Pam Thomas.  Lauren loves Auburn football, going to Braves games, and running.

Upper School Learning Specialist and Registrar

Pamela Sewell

Pamela Sewell is joining the HA staff as the Registrar and Upper School Learning Lab Learning Specialist.  Mrs. Sewell taught in both public and private schools in Mobile and Phenix City for 10 years.  She taught special education, academic enrichment, algebra, geometry, and world history.  Mrs. Sewell has a B.S. in health education from Florida State University and an M.Ed in specific learning disabilities from University of South Alabama. 

Pamela was born in Dothan, but grew up in Panama City, Florida.  Mrs. Sewell is married to Dr. Joseph Sewell II and they have two children, Dr. Joseph H. Sewell III (a 2006 graduate of HA) who is in his second year of residency at University of South Alabama Medical Center and Ryan, who is currently in the ninth grade at Houston Academy.  In her spare time, Mrs. Sewell enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, and going to sporting events

3^rd Grade

Jo Ellen Nelson  

Ms. Nelson will be one of our third grade teachers this year.  She holds a B.S. from University of Alabama and an M.A. from Troy University in Elementary Education. Jo Ellen has worked as a third grade teacher and Instructional Coach in Dothan City Schools. Basically, Jo Ellen has been working with other teachers to improve their own teaching. Jo Ellen has a great deal of passion for children and for education.

On the personal front, Jo Ellen has three children: Joe, who is a world history teacher and head soccer coach and varsity academic coach at Northview; Sara, who is a senior at Troy University pursuing a medical career; and Virginia, who will be starting at Tuscaloosa this fall to pursue her dream of becoming a special education teacher. Jo Ellen loves to exercise (she ran the 2014 Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta), to garden, and to read. One day, she hopes to write a children’s book!

5^th Grade

Erin Barragry

Erin Barragry comes to us from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  She attended the University of Minnesota where she received both her B.S. and M.S. in education and was a member of Rho Lambda Honor Society.  For those of you who are not familiar, the University of Minnesota has one of the top schools of education in the United States. Moreover, we are very excited about the technology skills and experience she will bring to H.A.

Ms. Barragry is looking forward to a new (and warmer) adventure here in Dothan. Outside of school, she loves to golf, hike, camp, travel, play games, and bake. Other interests include country music and going to football games.

6^th Grade

Lisa Cohen

Lisa Cohen will be teaching 6^th grade next year. She is joining us from Jacobson Sinai Academy in Miami, Florida, where she was a 6^th and 7^th grade teacher. Lisa graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from New Jersey City University. Currently, she is enrolled in an Educational Master’s program in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on digital leaning. Not surprisingly, Mrs. Cohen is excited about H.A.’s technology initiative and looks forward to using her technology integration skills in the classroom.

Outside of school, Mrs. Cohen has been a teacher of martial arts for many years. She currently holds the rank of Senior Master as a 6^th degree black belt. She also is very committed to working with various charitable organizations, but her greatest source of pride is her children. She and her husband, Melvyn, love to travel.

Sandra Egan

Sandra Egan will teach our third section of 6^th grade this year. Ms. Egan holds a B.S. in Education from the University of Houston with an additional certification in teaching talented and gifted children. Most recently, she taught 5^th and 6^th grades in Corpus Christi, Texas.  Earlier in her career, she was named teacher of the year at her school in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Sandra has come to Dothan due to her husband’s relocation with his job at Boeing.

Sandra is married to Bill Egan, and they have two children. John is 24 and is in graduate school at the University of Texas-Austin, and Brittany is 21 and is a dental assistant in Corpus Christi, Texas.  Brittany is getting married in May 30, 2015! Sandra enjoys scrapbooking, jewelry making, and gardening. 

Upper School Chorus and Music

Julie Arthur

Julie Arthur will take over our extraordinarily successful chorus program.  Julie has a B.A. in Music with an emphasis in Musical Education from Azusa Pacific University (CA), and an M.A. in Music, with an emphasis in coral conducting from San Jose State University. 

Julie possesses strong qualifications to lead any instrumental or choral program.  She has strong experience as a classroom teacher AND as a private music instructor.  She has helped organize and run a high school and junior college choral festival and has organized performance opportunities for her private students.  Julie's youth ensemble (through the Smith Academy of Singers) successfully performed with the Imperial Valley Master Chorale, as well as in a concert of its own.  As a conductor she conducted the world premier of “Our Father, Lord and Shepherd” by Phil Shakleton, and she recently conducted a group of singers on stage with the Rolling Stones! We are also very excited that she is an accomplished strings performer, and we plan on adding a strings program here at HA.  When we do so, we will have the only strings program in the Wiregrass. 

Julie is from a very small town in California. She and her husband, Peter, just got married last July, and they spent their first year of marriage living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Julie loves having tea parties and traveling the world, and her hobby is learning languages.  She does not have any children, yet, but she is "dying to get a puppy!" 

Mrs. Holman, Mrs. Boothe, and I could not be more pleased with the hires we have made this spring and summer. We have been lucky enough to find people who are not only outstanding in their field, but also have a passion for young people. Please join me in welcoming this outstanding group of new teachers to the HA family!

The HA Family

At the beginning of the school year, I scheduled appointments with every teacher and staff member in the school in order to get to know everyone a little better. I wanted to get a sense of everyone's family, why they work at HA, what they like about HA, where they think we need to improve, and (of course) what I can do for them.

The information I obtained was invaluable.  What I already felt to be true was confirmed: We have an extremely dedicated, talented, and caring group of faculty and staff who love our children and our school community. Every single member of our faculty and staff could be making more money (sometimes MUCH more money) working in a public school or in the business world, but they choose to stay at Houston Academy because they love it.

To this end, as I mentioned above, I asked the faculty and staff the question, "What do you like about HA?" Here is a sampling of the answers I received:

"I enjoy coming to work every day. I love the kids, and the people are great."
"I love working at a place where the kids love coming to school."
"I feel like I've died and gone to teacher heaven... I feel like we are making an investment in our kids."
"The school is challenging; children believe they can achieve their dreams; DREAMS LIVE HERE."
"There is strong parent and administrative support."
"My kids came here from [private school in Dothan]. I was shocked to see how far they were behind the other HA kids, but the great thing is, the teachers were so supportive, and my children caught up.I feel so happy now, knowing how well prepared my kids are for college."
"Everyone is so kind."
"HA is full of happy, positive people."
"I like that we are independent and can make our own rules and curriculum."

However, the most prevalent theme came down to one simple word: family. 

We all know that HA offers the only true, rigorous college preparatory curriculum in the Wiregrass. However, I was a little surprised to find out that our rigor and educational quality was not what people on the faculty felt was the best aspect of the school. Instead, they thought it was our family environment:

"HA looked out for my family. When we had problems, the people here were there for us."
"It's a family atmosphere where my children feel safe - both emotionally and physically."
"It's like a little family. People take care of each other, and the teachers treat the children like their own."
"It's a family. Everyone is genuine."
"I like that I really get to know the kids. I know them almost as well as I know my own. It's a family" 

Of the almost 90 meetings I had with faculty and staff, the word "family" came up over 70 times. As a parent who chose to put my three children in school at HA, I have to admit, I got a little choked up, and was extraordinarily touched, listening to the teacher stories about how the HA family had positively impacted their life and the lives of the children in our care. It's great to know that my three kids will receive an unbelievable college preparatory education at HA; it's even better to know they will be loved.

Our New Faculty and Staff!

With the bevy of educational reforms that have been imposed on our schools over the last 40 years, it seems that our political and educational leaders have forgotten one key fact: The single most important factor in a student’s learning is the quality of the classroom teacher.[1]

To that point, we have an outstanding faculty at HA. I think most of you know that when my family and I were looking at various headmaster jobs across the Southeast, we weren't merely looking for a job; we were looking for a place to educate and raise our three children. The faculty here at HA is a big part of the reason why we chose to come to Houston Academy.

Houston Academy has been very fortunate to be able to attract and retain a talented and assiduous faculty. That trend has continued with the hires we made this spring and summer. Please allow me to briefly introduce you to the newest members of the HA faculty and staff.

Of course, everyone who has been in the HA community knows what an outstanding educational leader Tammi Holman is. I expected big things from her, as our new Upper School Head, but she has exceeded my lofty expectations. Her innovation, incredible work ethic, scholarship, and keen understanding of children have inspired me. I believe you will see that our Upper School, which is already incredibly strong, will become even stronger under Ms. Holman’s leadership. Ms. Holman has a B.S. and graduate work from Troy University.  

Joel Pendleton is our new Director of Development.  Prior to his appointment at HA, Mr. Pendleton was the Advancement Coordinator for an educational organization called Student Statesman Institute (SSI), which is located in Lansing, Michigan. SSI is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to teaching law, Public Policy, Business, Communications, and Civics to high school students. Joel raised 2/3 of the entire operating budget for SSI who gave him exceedingly high recommendations.   I am very excited about what Joel brings to the proverbial table.  He is dynamic and motivated.

Leanne Todd will be moving into the position of Assistant Director of Development and the Director of Alumni Affairs. Most of you probably all know Ms. Todd, who is an alumna of the school and our Cheerleading Coach. Ms. Todd will be invaluable in developing a full-fledged alumni program for HA. We feel confident that she will be able to help our graduates and their families stay connected to our school. She will also help Joel in his efforts to build ties with current members of the HA community. Mrs. Todd has a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Alabama.

Vanessia Snell is coming to HA from Dothan High, where she has been the Lead Science Teacher for Dothan City Schools and a teacher of AP chemistry, AP physics, physical science, and biology. Furthermore, Ms. Snell has been an adjunct instructor at both Troy-Dothan and Wallace Community College, has been an AP Chemistry Exam Reader for the College Board, and has served as a consultant to College Board.  Ms. Snell will be teaching AP chemistry, chemistry, and physics this year. Ms. Snell holds a B.S. in Comprehensive Science Education from Troy University, an M.A. in Science Education from Troy-Dothan, and post Master’s Chemistry Certification from the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Patti Woodham Flowers will be joining HA as the HALL (Houston Academy Learning Lab) teacher after over 24 years of experience working with students from diverse backgrounds. In particular, Ms. Flowers has been a K-12 special education teacher working both in a resource room and in the general classroom setting.  Ms. Flowers has a B.S. and M.A. in specific learning disabilities from Troy University.

Leisha Hayes, the former HALL teacher, will be moving to the 3^rd grade classroom, full-time. Leisha has an M.S. in Early Childhood Education from Troy-Dothan and a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Auburn University.  Before coming to HA, Leisha was a teacher in the Houston County School system. We are excited about what Leisha brings to our regular classroom environment. 

Jimmy Riggs comes to us from Savannah, Georgia to teach mathematics. Specifically, he will be taking over the AP Calculus program in our Upper School.  Mr. Riggs is an alumnus of Roanoke College where he graduated Cum Laude with a major in mathematics and a minor in education. Interestingly, Mr. Riggs comes fresh off of a stint of teaching math in Wuhan, China. Furthermore, Mr. Riggs recently attended the College Board’s Summer Institute for Teachers of Advanced Placement Calculus at the University of Alabama. In addition to his teaching duties, Mr. Riggs will be coaching soccer with Rick Vasquez this spring.

Shelly Phillipps will be serving as our Director of Enrollment and Marketing and will be teaching World History.  Shelly has taught for 20 years in both independent and public schools. Additionally, she has served as the Executive Director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Middle Georgia. In this capacity, she was responsible for marketing, fundraising, personnel management, and recruitment. In her teaching career in Georgia, Ms. Phillipps was named Teacher of the Year and STAR Teacher. She holds a B.A. in History and Classics from Miami University (OH), an M.A. in Humanities from Central Michigan University, and an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership from Lincoln Memorial University (TN).

Our most recent new hire this year is Ben Leer who will be joining us in the Mathematics Department.  Ben has moved to Dothan from St. Petersburg, FL. Mr. Leer holds a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Central Florida, and he tutored students for six years at many levels of math including algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus, and SAT preparation. Ben is currently continuing his education at Troy University.  Moreover, Ben also has worked in outdoor education and as an internet marketing specialist. 

Houston Academy is very fortunate to have recruited this level of expertise to HA. It would certainly be impossible to overestimate the contributions that Marion Spivey, Joe Pelham, Ned Jenne, and Karen McCarroll have made to our school and to our children.  However, despite those significant and poignant losses, I believe we have brought a wealth of new talent into the HA community that will continue to offer the best education to students of the Wiregrass region.  I am eager for you to see them in action, and I hope you will join me in warmly welcoming them.
